  How to politely refuse a last chance meeting with the elders?

  the elders are giving me a chance to meet up with them a last time in order to try to prevent a disfellowshipping.

  one of the elders will call me in two days to see what i think because i told him that i don't want to be in the religion anymore.

  how can i politely and painlessly refuse?

  I think you have received some good advice here.

  However, if it was me, I would just avoid all telephone calls. I have found that you can plan to the last word what to say if you have a meeting with them but invariably conversations don't follow the patten rehearsed and you may end up saying something you regret or tell them something you didn't want them to know. I am a believer in saying as little as possible, you can always say more but you can never take back something once it has been said.

  This way you cannot make a mistake in what you say, you cannot be rude (which is something Elders enjoy as they see it as persecution so why feed their egos?), there will also be nothing for them to report back to your parents.

  what was it like to live in the 1950's 1960's and early 70's as a jehovah witness.when they started to push the 1975 date..

  Debator, I wasn't a JW in 1975 but my husband and his family all were.

  I, like you, thought that people has misunderstood 1975 and have questioned my husband tirelessly over it. He was aged 16 in 1975 and therefore of an age when his memory was good.

  At assemblies people were encouraged to give up their jobs and told that there was no finer way of spending their last days. Lots of people did this believing it was the right thing to do. Fortunately, my husband's family didn't though they did stock up plenty on food.

  I have always believed that no-one should serve with a date in mind, one should live a good Christian life simply because they want to and certainly not for any reward. Doing it for a reward negates everything about Christianity.

  My in-laws have all their old Watchtowers and Awakes dating back prior to 1975 and it is my husband's intention to go through these.

  However, there is one well known book called "Millions now living will never Die", perhaps you can explain this.

  Also, how old were you in 1975?

  A Sincere Question...

  to the household of god, israel, and those who go with... may you have peace!.

  i have a very sincere question to ask because of some recent comments i've received regarding postings on the board.

  the subject is on my mind... and heart... because of two similar incidents that occurred in my life since my journey began, which i would like to relate to you.

  For me if I was one of four people having dinner and a subject came up in conversation which I knew little or nothing about I would be interested to listen to the others, particularly as I could possibly learn three different viewpoints on a new subject. Usually though, at such dinners the subject changes which would then mean I could join in though if the other three were all interesting I would enjoy listening and perhaps may even ask a question so I can learn more.

  That said, if I was with a group of JWs I would find conversation difficult because to be quite honest they only have one subject. Also, because of the way they are taught to be judgmental of others it can make any other type of conversation very difficult. So you are not alone there.

  I can honestly say I have never had a decent, interesting conversation with any JWs until I came to this site and I am amazed at how diverse, how articulate and how witty everyone is. I have learnt so much just by reading posts and often laugh out loud. These are the kind of people I enjoy socialising with.

  it was a long time coming.

  i stopped going to meetings june 09. the reason i left it so long is because my husband is still in and for this reason i see witnesses from time to time.

  Were you ever embarrassed or somewhat ashamed when the WT patted themselves on the back in their own articles?

  i was browsing through the december 2010 awake, and noticed an article on the earthquake that happened in haiti earlier this year.

  it didn't take long for the article to disturb me.

  the third paragraph initiated the sanctimonious tone that is present througout the article.

  Well you never hear other people praising themselves like this. There is just so much help that goes on by all people not just witnesses.

  For example, I worked in Central London for a few years and in the evenings churches of all denominations were giving out sandwiches and hot drinks to the homeless. Any homeless people not just those with the same beliefs. I have lived in England all my life and never knew that this was going on until I actually worked in the City for a bit.

  This is just one small example I am sure that there are many more worldwide.

  Is it mandatory to either be DF or to DA?

  The reason I asked that we haven't attended a meeting for almost two years now. We weren't DF and we haven't written a letter of DA. We just literally faded. Do they not just cross you off their records or whatever for non-attendance?

  was there a 1975 "scare"

  ive heard through different research ive done along with people ive talked too that there was a 1975 "scare" in which the time was supposed and the end was at hand

  According to my husband his parents stocked up their house full of food even having some sort of gel in which to preserve eggs! He said it took them years to finally get through all the food they had stocked up on.

  His mother put off having back surgery until this year when she actually said that she may not now be alive when Armageddon happens - she is now 82 and finally out of pain from her back after finally having the surgery.

  Also, when we visited her in hospital recently she even said that the JWs have ruined thousands of people's lives! However, now she is back home she has returned to going to the meetings.

  can anyone explain the saying "he was not a real jehovahs witness "

  when a min servant from bethel was found out to have abused a lot of kids in the congregation it was said by a few in the congregation that he not a "real " jehovahs witness !

  despite the fact that right up to his arrest many thought he was so wonderfull and spiritual !

  then when my daughters abuser was convicted a young woman in the congregation whos sister was another victim used the saying to me that he was not a "real jw !

  Some good points have been made here. Obviously, there are good and bad in all walks of life - JWs are no exception.

  I have also heard it said in similar situations where perhaps a JW has been convicted of child abuse "Oh and he said he was a JW as well". As if to say he just made out he was one when his crime was found out and of course he had never been one at all.

  As someone said, a kneejerk reaction rather than facing the truth and dealing with it - people would have som much more respect for them if they admitted they had some evil people and were seen to deal with them as they should.

  Well, I haven't been posting long so haven't got to know many people that well. However, I do somehow already feel close to some and I do care about them and their lives. They have given so much of their time to this site, helping others who like me at times have suffered severe depression or other associated problems. They have gone through similar and continue to give back to others.

  Thank you seems inadequate

  I would dearly love to meet some of them, maybe one day, who knows?

  it seems as if they have survived it all.

  bad press such as articles on molestations, neutrality, blood, defections of high ranking officials, crazy changes in doctrines, financial stresses, passage of a 100 years without one prophecy coming true.

  yet they are still going strong with new members being recruited at a faster level than those who leave.

  Also, the Org loves numbers and the numbers they publish usually look favourable whatever has really happened. Therefore, those listening to the report then think "it must be right" the numbers prove it.

  As has been highlighted on this site the numbers used are not usually correct so the people just aren't getting the true picture

  As some have said with regard to those partaking the reality is that this number is going up whereas based on what the WT have said realistically that number should be very low by now. It has also been said that they don't even count some of those who are partaking.

  I remember an Elder running through the numbers of witnesses at one meeting and the UK the number hadn't changed but he stated because of people dying the numbers had really gone up. However, people die in all countries not just the UK it was just that numbers were going up in some other countries so people dying weren't mentioned then.

  They just find new ways of delivering what they want everyone to believe.
